The Scottie Press is 40 years young in February! To celebrate Britain's longest running and award winning community newspaper reaching a milestone, we at the Scottie Press would like to bring out a book commemorating the paper. We want to hear from you! Have you ever worked with the S.P? How long have you been buying the paper? Why did you first buy it? What memories does it bring? Do you have any pictures or clippings of interesting stories that caught your eye? If so why? Is it because you're in them? If you want to get involved or would like more details you can click here to Contact Us.
Above is a picture from the S.P archives, we are unsure whether it's a staff photograph of the V.N.C or the wild bunch at the Scottie Press. Do you know better? We need your help! As we'll be too busy partying away to write a book. THE NEW KITTY WILKINSON STATUE
This is our first view of the new statue of health pioneer Kitty Wilkinson which will stand in St George's Hall. It is the work of sculptor Simon Smith - who has recently worked on new gargoyles to be displayed at Westminster Abbey. The maquette will be developed in to a two metre Italian marble sculpture which will eventually be unveiled in September 2011. It will also be the first time one of Liverpool's famous women has been celebrated in this way. The £150,000 statue will eventually be one of three famous Liverpool women who will be commemorated at the hall, alongside social reformers Josephine Butler and Eleanor Rathbone. The Scottie Press and former editor Ron Formby has championed local artist Terry McGunigle's campaign over the years to remember the life and work of Kitty Wilkinson. Terry got the ball rolling on creating awareness and raising interest to get a statue made which was eventually taken on by St Georges Hall, he put forward a submission of his own for the design of the sculpture in an open competition which was sadly not successful. We spoke to Terry who is still going ahead with finalising his statue. In conjunction with the charity Face Africa and The Mersey Forum the finished statue will be given to a hospital of the charitys choice in the African continent. The forum will be holding a fund raising event at the Anglican cathedral and will be showing a 4 foot model of the proposed carving. Terry sent the Scottie Press a picture of his proposed statue (featured below).
We are inviting our readers to comment on both statues which are significantly different from each other. What do you think? Email greg.creighton@scottiepress.org or sean.dixon@scottiepress.org with your thoughts. To contact us at the Scottie Press email |
