Closure of Saint Sylvester's
The church of Saint Sylvester's first mass was said in April 1875 in a large old shed in Silvester Street. The influx of: Irish, Italian and Polish Roman Catholics led to a necessity for a church to be established in the area. Funds were raised from various sources to buy the site on which the shed stood. A gothic style Church of red brick was later built on the site and the first mass was said there on 2nd September 1889, dedicated to Pope Sylvester the 1st, who was Bishop of Rome in the years from 314 - 335 by Bishop Bernard O'Reily. During the May Blitz of 1941, the church was hit by German bombers. The Church, although struck, received little damage. The following morning, however, the Junior and Infants school connected to the church was hit and gutted by another German bomber. It is sad to see the Closure of Saint Sylvester's. Through the people it served and brought together along with what it has been through, the Church will be remembered fondly, forever. Congratulations Knowsley South!
