The late Ted Grunes was an extremely talented man. He was an Artist, Model-maker and Poet. His is pictured above at last years' reunion of The Gambier Terrace Art School Liverpool, proudly wearing his old school badge when he exhibited this wonderful model boat. Each piece including the working engine was made by Ted. The paintings behind were all done by Ted

MODERN MOSAICS

The artwork of Carol Moretta Rigg

We are pleased to be able to feature the mosaic artwork of Carol Moretta Rigg. The Colours Of India mosaic (see above) was done after Carol visited India in 2002. It is worked in traditional Smalti, which are hand made tessere from Italy, made of a very dense enamelized glass. This type of tessere has been used since the Byzantine era and come in an enormous range of colours.

The White On Black mosaic is based on a book illustration that was done by Henri Matisse. Worked in vitreous glass tessere 3/4inch square which I have cut into at least 4 pieces on this mosaic. Some pieces are cut much smaller when needed.

Herdwick Ram. This mosaic uses black tessere in vitreous glass and also includes random pieces of coloured glass. The rams head was done using mainly ceramic tiles which have no sheen so that it stands out from the shining black and glass.

A Hill Town In The South of France. This was actually one of Carol's first attempts at doing a mosaic. The buildings were done in ceramic tiles, the rest of the mosaic are vitreous glass.

Most of Carol's work is done as pictures measuring in the region of 18/20ins X 24ins approximately to hang in the home usually.

SHOWCASING LOCAL ARTIST'S

Street Scene.

We are delighted to be able to feature artwork by Brenda Curran on this web page as by way of highlighting the feelings of the Scottie Press that many more opportunities should be given to local artists to have their work appreciated. Brenda’s painting is her interpretation of a street scene of yesteryear in the Scotland Road area recognised as being Liverpool’s ‘Little Ireland’.

Readers of the Scottie Press will know that for quite some time the community newspaper and website have voiced up the need for showcasing local artists’ work mindful of the massive redevelopment in the city which will undoubtedly see a lot of artwork adorning hallways and rooms etc of new retail outlets, hotels and apartments.

If you would like to have your artwork featured on this web page please contact ronformby@scottiepress.org
